Apple China VPN Ban

Today, July 29 2017, Apple has removed MacSentry VPN, and all other VPN apps, from the app store in China "because it includes illegal content."   The notification came from Apple today, and is included below.

From Apple

Hello,

We are writing to notify you that your application will be removed from the China App Store because it includes content that is illegal in China, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines:

5. Legal
Apps must comply with all legal requirements in any location where you make them available (if you’re not sure, check with a lawyer). We know this stuff is complicated, but it is your responsibility to understand and make sure your app conforms with all local laws, not just the guidelines below. And of course, apps that solicit, promote, or encourage criminal or clearly reckless behavior will be rejected.

While your app has been removed from the China App Store, it is still available in the App Stores for the other territories you selected in iTunes Connect.

This is unfortunate on many levels.  It is most unfortunate that China has been able to censor the internet and ban the freedom of information to its citizens so easily due to how the business ecosystem of Apple works, successfully censoring 1.4 billion people with one fell swoop.   It is also very disconcerting that Apple has aided the Chinese government so readily.

This banning of VPN software for iOS devices in China by Apple only impacts users who use the Chinese app store.  Users in China connected to App stores in other countries are not affected.

At this point it is unclear if apple has disabled the built-in VPN connection functionality of iOS.  At this time we would recommend all our users affected by this to connect to our VPN servers manually by following the manual setup procedure as outlined in our VPN Setup Guides for iOS.

We here at MacSentry are steadfastly committed to fight against censorship and help maintain the freedom of information, as well as to protecting our users privacy.   Our support is available 24x7 by using our support request form or by email [email protected] should you require any assistance with this, or any matter.
